We did it for various reasons including my experience student teaching 1st grade & seeing that kids with summer birthdays tended to be held back more often. He's a slightly above average student who takes honors classes but doesn't get all As. He was seeing & doing everything for the first time along with the kids who just turned 5.Īnd we didn't do it so he'd be 'the best'. He went to private pre-k (there's not a public option here unless you're ESL, low-income or special needs) as a 5YO & then straight into K as a just turned 6YO. He didn't even do private & then public kindergarten. My redshirted son never repeated a grade. Not that I saw anyway.īut just because they're the age of a 2nd grader doesn't mean they've already done 1st grade work. No one acted in different than the 17 year olds like me did. Thanks to facebook, I know now that lots of my classmates were a year or two older than me and the other kids born my year. Anyone who went to school on time, but was born between October(or December or whenever the cutoff may be) and June, and got left back would be 19 when they graduate high school.ĮTA: I am class of 1989, our cutoff was Dec 31st, so everyone who went to school with me should have been born in 1971 and be turning 40 this year. I am sure there are plenty of kids who were 19 in high school, and always have been. He went on to college, has a successful career.just like the 17 and 18 year olds he graduated with. ![]() There were no issues with him being 19 in high school(granted, it was only for 2 weeks before graduation). However, he got left back in 1st grade so instead he turned 19 just before the end. He has an early June birthday, started K on time(when he was 5), so would have turned 18 just before the end of his senior year. I love him but he is no athlete & that was obvious from a very young age. They all showed improvement throughout the year so I think I did something right.Īnd anyone who would think I held my kid back for athletic reasons would only need to spend 15 minutes with him. For example, at my library center I made sure I had upper level books they could read (sometimes they chose to read a lower level book to a friend & that was OK). I used center-based learning a lot so they had opportunities to stretch & grow. ![]() I had a reading specialist work with my higher kids & would have my aide pull them as well for stuff. I still IMO found a way to meet all their needs. My K class was very diverse even with no redshirts. I kept the lines of communication open with the parents in regards to their development (1 was at level with a few fine motor problems the other was above level but had a few social/discipline problems) & at the end of the year they both advanced with no concerns by me. I didn't have any kids who were redshirted this year but I did have a few who were very young.
